The PPTP client connects to your ISP using PPP dial-up (modem traditional or ISDN) .2. Through the broker device (described above), PPTP creates a TCP control connection between the client and the VPN server to establish a tunnel. PPTP uses TCP port 1723 for these connections.PPTP also supports VPN connectivity over a LAN. ISP connections are not required in this case, so the tunnels can be created directly as in Step 2 above.Once the VPN tunnel is established, PPTP supports two types of information flow:
* Message control management and eventually scrap the VPN connection. Control messages pass directly between VPN client and server .* data packets that pass through the tunnel, or from the client PPTP VPN Connection Control After the TCP connection is established in step 2 above, PPTP utliizes a series of control messages to maintain connections VPN. These messages are listed Name Description below.Number StartControlConnectionRequest Started installing the VPN session, can be sent by any client or server. StartControlConnectionReply sent in response to the request to initiate connection (1) contains result code indicating the success or failure of the installation operation, and also the version number of the protocol. StopControlConnectionRequest Request to close the control connection. StopControlConnectionReply sent in response to the connection request stop (3) contains result code indicating the success or failure of the transaction closing. EchoRequest sent periodically by either client or server to "ping" the connection (keep alive). EchoReply Posted in response to echo request (5) to keep the connection alive. OutgoingCallRequest Request to create a VPN tunnel sent by the client. OutgoingCallReply Reply to the call (7), contains a unique identifier for the tunnel.
9 IncomingCallRequest request for a VPN client to receive a call from server.
10 IncomingCallReply Reply to the call (9), indicating whether the call should be answered.
11 Answer IncomingCallConnected to answer incoming call (10), provides additional parameters called the VPN server.
12 CallClearRequest request to shut down or an incoming or outgoing envoy the server to a client.
13 CallDisconnectNotify response to the disconnection (12), sent back to the server.
14 WANErrorNotify Notification sent periodically to the server of the CRC, framing, hardware and buffer overruns, waiting time and byte alignment errors.
15 SetLinkInfo Notification of changes in the underlying PPP options.
With PPTP control messages to use one called magic cookie. The magic cookie is PPTP specified for the hexadecimal number 0x1A2B3C4D. The purpose of this cookie is to ensure that the receiver interprets the data entry at the correct bytes.
PPTP Security
PPTP supports authentication, encryption and packet filtering. Authentication PPTP uses PPP-based protocols such as EAP, CHAP and PAP. PPTP supports filtering packet VPN servers. Intermediate routers and other firewalls can also be configured to filter the PPTP traffic selectively.
PPTP and PPP In general, PPTP depends on the functionality of PPP to these aspects of virtual private network. * Authenticate users and maintain the remote dial-up connection
* Encapsulate and encrypt IP, IPX, NetBEUI or PPTP packets directly deals with the maintenance of the VPN tunnel and transmitting data through the tunnel. PPTP also supports several security features additional data beyond the VPN PPP provides.
Pros and Cons PPTP PPTP is still a popular choice for VPNs thanks to Microsoft. PPTP clients are freely available in all popular versions of Microsoft Windows. Windows servers can also act as PPTP-based VPN servers.
One of the disadvantages PPTP is its inability to choose a single standard for authentication and encryption. Two products that both fully compatible with the specifications PPTP may be totally incompatible with each other to encrypt data differently, for example. There is also concern about the level of questionable safety PPTP offers compared to alternatives.
