Why does not my product key work?

I just got a new labtop hp and the guy tried to buy me sel updating the Microsoft Word program student but I do not want it, when I went to open Microsoft Word asks for the product key number for validation, I have printed on the back of my computer, but he says it is not correct, when I really lokked in which he said was Microsoft Office or Microsoft Student or something. Is this just a version test? I finally found where I have the Microsoft Works word processor that does not request the code, but looks just like Windows XP that I hoped for a one update and would not open my files sent by email in my Microsoft Word 2007 schools. That's what I would have if I'm not receiving any updates?

You get what you pay for. This is Best Buy, after all.
