Windows Xp Putty

LINUX & PDF File?
I am brand new to LINUX. I am accessing my allocated storage space that my school asigned to me on a LINUX/AFS network. My Windows XP machine is able to access the LINUX environment via a program called PuTTy. (In other words, I am typing UNIX commands to navigate the network).
I used the cp comand to copy a pdf file to the storage space allocated to me by the school. I have no idea how to access this pdf file.
Ideally I would like to copy it to my laptop but the only directory I seem to have access to is the school's directory. I would settle for opening the file somehow, but as I said 'I am new to LINUX' and I don't even know if this is possible. I really prefer to get the file on my desktop.
Any suggestions would be appreciated b/c I have been going in circles for almost two hours.
Disregard, I just remembered we have a program for transferring files. If anyone wants to give me a few clues about UNIX, that'd be cool. =)
putty just opens a separate session on the host box. You would use an ftp program on your xp machine to transfer files from the linux boxes to your machine.
